Preschool Program

Our Preschool is structured so that children can master the environment easily. Children soon learn that they can move from one activity to another at their own pace, in their own time. Our classroom is divided into interest areas designed with the child in mind. Equipment is kept on low shelves within easy reach and we encourage children to help themselves. When children start school, they may be separated from parents and home for the first time. Although this is a necessary part of growing up, this separation can cause some stress. To ease the transition, our teachers visit the children at home before school starts. The children get to know their teachers in the environment where they feel most secure. Then, on the first day of school, the child recognizes a familiar face. We encourage parents to stay with their children until the child is ready for a short “good-bye.” Teachers are accessible to children at Kentucky Avenue Children’s Center. It’s always easy for the children to find someone to read to them, to tie a shoe or to offer a lap to snuggle. We are proud of being and staying small. In a world that often rushes by far too quickly, we look forward to sharing and enjoying each day together. One of the more meaningful and valued lessons children take with them from their preschool years at Kentucky Avenue Children’s Center is knowing how to respect and genuinely care for each other.

Pre-Kindergarten Program

The Pre-Kindergarten Program introduces and helps children to strengthen social/emotional and readiness skills necessary for a successful and enjoyable Kindergarten year. Discovery, exploration and cooperative group involvement are at the heart of the Pre-Kindergarten experience. We strive to educate each child by sharing knowledge and love of learning using a creative approach integrating literature, art, music and cultural awareness with reading readiness, math readiness, science and French in all programs. Our enthusiasm for life and one another prompts us to remember that childhood should be savored. Life is not a race. The educational atmosphere in the Pre-Kindergarten at Kentucky Avenue Children’s Center promotes the school’s philosophy that each child is an individual with respect to their unique learning style. Throughout the school year, children in the program learn to refine and develop social/emotional, listening, verbal, fine and gross motor skills in addition to sharing enjoyable experiences with their teachers and classmates!
